Abstract:
»High incidents of rape in Adamawa State during the period of COVID-19 in 2020 have been interrogated but little is known about the trend in rape incidents before the year 2020. This study filled this gap by analysing the trend and pattern of incidents of rape in Adamawa State from 2010 to 2020. Data were collected from Police records of rape incidents and key informant interviews were conducted with 12 respondents. The study shows that the yearly distribution of rape incidents fluctuated before it started rising in 2016 and reached its peak in 2020. Six Metropolitan Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state account for 81.5% of incidents of rape out of the 21 LGAs. While most of the perpetrators are males (97.8%) and are mostly between the age bracket of 18–33 years (62.7%), most of the victims are females (95%) and mostly minors (less than 18 years) (75.5%). The study concludes that the trend and pattern of incidents of rape in Adamawa State before and during the outbreak of COVID-19 Pandemic are similar. COVID-19 was only a threat multiplier that exacerbate incidents of rape in 2020.«
